“It is Finished!”

The powerful words our Lord spoke from the cross became a solid anchor for Dora Rappard’s faith.  She was a devout child.  When she turned 15 though, the Holy Spirit revealed the sinfulnees of her heart such that she considered herself to be the worst of sinners.  One night her despair increased to the highest level.  She cried out to God for salvation.  Suddenly the words of the Saviour shone within her, “It is finished!” in conjunction with the apostle’s words: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household” shone within her.

“My ear did not hear a voice”, she wrote, “My eye saw no light, my soul did not feel a special touch, but my faith solidly understood the clear word of the Gospel.  She  had found the solid ground, that became her eternal anchor.  She experienced that of which she later sang:

“O Word of Life my faith can rest in you.

Upon this Rock I’m grounded and secure.

For God’s plan of salvation is complete.

Take it sinner, it’s for you,

There is nothing you can do, God has done it all for you.

It is finished! It is finished!”
